The present Hampshire County Athletics Hall of Fame was begun by the then Hampshire High Athletic Director, Erino Leone, in 2009 although others had broached the idea previously. The first action was to recognize the members of the state champion 1960 Romney High School basketball team as the first team honorees. After that, a Hall of Fame committee was organized with Donnie Davis as the chairman and a second state championship team, the 1949 Romney High School football squad, was inducted. The committee established a constitution and by-laws in 2010 with some direction from Stan Shingleton, a Romney High School grad with experience in high school hall of fame organizations in Ohio. Plans were made for also honoring individual athletes and coaches and the first full class of inductees was honored in 2011.
