Interpreting 2023 Student Test Results
Results
from 2022-23 student testing will be released on or about Sept.
19. Please see the following information about the tests given
for different student groups. Then review the
results given to your student and read how to interpret the
information for the appropriate test(s).
Tests
given annually to Hampshire County Students:
TEST - WVGSA – West Virginia General Summative Assessment
Hampshire County School students in grades
3 through 8 participate in the state-wide assessment, West Virginia General Summative Assessment (WVSGA).
- The West Virginia General Summative Assessment (WVGSA) for students in grades 3-8 is an online summative test given toward the end of the school year to measure student performance on the state’s content standards, which provide clear, consistent guidelines for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level.
Students in grades 3-8 are assessed in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics. Students in grades 5 and 8 also are assessed in science.

TEST - SAT School Day Assessment
Hampshire County School students in Grade 11 participate in the SAT School Day Assessment in the spring
- The SAT School Day is the state’s general summative assessment for high school. It is administered on paper to all grade 11 students, except those who take the West Virginia Alternate Summative Assessment. The SAT School Day is given during a regular school day in the spring of each year. It is a nationally recognized college- and career-readiness assessment administered by the College Board and is accepted at colleges and universities throughout West Virginia and the nation for both college admissions and placement. It also can be used to qualify for the Promise Scholarship. Students have access to practice SAT tests through Khan Academy, which also provides West Virginia educators and students access to online content and resources to help prepare students for taking the SAT School Day.

TEST RESULTS - Lexile and Quantile Framework (for both the WVGSA & the SAT)
- The Lexile® Framework for Reading, commonly referred to as the Lexile Framework, has been linked to the West Virginia General Summative Assessment (WVGSA) in English Language Arts in Grades 3 – 8. Similarly, The Quantile® Framework for Mathematics has been linked to the West Virginia General Summative Assessment in Grades 3 – 8 (WVGSA).
- In addition, the Lexile® Framework and the Quantile® Framework has been linked to the SAT School Day exam delivered at Grade 11. Students in West Virginia also may be receiving Lexile and Quantile measures from a variety of different tests and programs used by their local schools. With Lexile and Quantile measures, educators and parents can spur and support student learning.

TEST - WVASA – West Virginia Alterative Summative Assessment
West Virginia students in grades 3-8 and grade 11 who have significant intellectual disabilities take the West Virginia Alternate Summative Assessment (WVASA), also known as the Dynamic Learning Maps, Alternate Summative Assessment.
- Students in grades 3-8 and grade 11 are assessed in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics. Students in grades 5, 8 and 11 also are assessed in science.

Other tests that may be given as needed or if the school is selected to participate:
TEST - PSAT- Practice SAT School Day Assessment
Students in grades 9 and 10 participate in the PSAT.
- This assessment is used as a benchmark assessment to provide information to the students, families, and school.
TEST - ELPA21 – English Language Proficiency Assessment for the 21st Century
Hampshire County School students in grades K through 12 participate in the ELPA 21, who have been identified as having limited English proficiency.
- This assessment is untimed, an approximate test time for all 4 domains varies by grade level as follows: grade K-1 about 69 minutes; grades 2-3 about 63 minutes; grades 4-5 about 91 minutes; grades 6-8 about 128 minutes; and grades 9-12 about 155 minutes.
TEST - NAEP – National Assessment for Education Progress
Hampshire County School students in grades 4 and 8 if selected to participate in the NAEP in Mathematics, Reading, Science and Writing.
- National Assessment of Educational Progress, is often called the “Nation’s Report Card.” It is the largest continuing and nationally representative assessment of what our nation’s students know and can do in core subjects. Results for NAEP assessments can be found at https://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/naepdata/.
